Chimney sweeping
The legislation regarding chimney sweeping has changed on 1 January 2019. With the change, rescue services will no longer decide how to organize chimney sweeping in their area, and the district sweeping that was generally used throughout Finland will end at the end of this June (30 June 2019). In Pirkanmaa, the change has been implemented in stages, and the majority of chimney sweeping districts have already been within the scope of free supply since 1 March 2019.
From the perspective of the building owner and occupier, the key change is that after the end of the district sweeping, everyone can choose their own chimney sweep from among qualified service providers, while in the district sweeping, a selected district sweeper had to be used. After the change, chimney sweeps will also no longer have access to the fee determined by the rescue service, but each service provider will price their services independently.
The change does not affect the obligations of the building owner or the qualifications required of the chimney sweep. The chimney sweep must have a professional qualification as a chimney sweep, and the building owner/occupier is obliged to ensure the condition of fireplaces and chimneys and regular chimney sweeping. In permanent homes, chimney sweeping must still be carried out annually, and in holiday homes at least every three years.
